I made up some activities and Smartboard files for Les Contraires. I got the list from the HEA 3 book "La grammaire et le vocabulaire". I amended the list a bit with ones that someone else had posted from the HEA 1 plays. Even though the first link is for lists 1 and 2 (I copy them back to back to save paper), the activities are for list 1 only. List 2 activities will be coming! Stay tuned!

Here are the links:

Les contraires Liste 1 and 2 alpha (with lines between 5 or 6 sets--I give to students for reference and practice with partners)

Les contraires phrases Liste 1 (students have to rewrite the sentence using "le contraire")

That's really fabulous work, Marie, thanks for sharing! BTW, how did you get the animated clip art in the PP to start working halfway (eg. met/enleve; ouvre/ferme)?

De rien!

I just happened to pick clipart that covered both actions. It depends on the timing of the students' answers. If they take a bit longer, the guy is doing "enlève" when you click to get "met"! I had that happen today. The file is more for intro/review and for fun. Better than flashcards!

I also really like the PP for the opposites and will use it as soon as my students know the words! It's nice to have a variety of reviews.

I agree - the PP is great - esp for the younger learners. I hope to 'create' more next year - this year's my first year with AIM and haven't gone outside the kits much.
Thanks again - I REALLY appreciate the time people take to share. Sophie

Hey Marie, I used your ppt today with my Grade 6 and 7 classes. We started with a brief review: "Le contraire de ferme est...." and more. Then I started the ppt. The class said "Le contraire de + the first picture showing + est + the opposite" It was great! They loved the pictures. We had to stop a few times so they could laugh, then we continued. I would show the picture of the opposite after the class said it.
Thanks so much!

I'm glad your students enjoyed it! Mine have always groaned when I gestured "maintenant tout le monde dit les contraires . . . ", so I wanted to make it very entertaining and fun. Now they ask for it!

Oh, non! J'ai fait une faute! J'ai oublié « garde » et « laisse » dans le PPT! My students noticed it when we were doing a Smartboard activity!

Here is a NEW link to the modified PPT:

Here are links to a pretest and test (answers provided) and they DON'T include garde and laisse!

Thanks Marie, it's amazing how I think about needing an activity and when I look on here, someone has already created it. Your timing is great!

Hi Marie,
I used your worksheet on contraires and had the students take it home and practice with their parents. Most parents were really happy to participate with their kids, but some parents told me that their kids were really annoyed with their parents "bad pronounciation" of the words.

Has that ever happened to you? One parent suggested I record a cd-I'm not really sure I want to go that far..what do you think?

The simplest thing is just to have the students teach their parents!! There is nothing wrong with this.

In answer to your questions, I have definitely had students tell me about their parents' bad pronunciations.
My students have the DVDs at home. When I am in a situation where that is not possible, yes, I have recorded myself. I have made video tapes of myself gesturing entire plays and I have also made audio recordings that I have put on the Internet so my students can access them. But none of this is really necessary!

I was just searching and found your resources on opposites. I think it's a great idea . I was just wondering at what point in the program( or which play) would it be good to focus on this?

I do activities with opposites beginning with the first play we work on. I find that it's a little bit different from other types of reviews and breaks things up for my students. I continue adding slowly to my students' knowledge of opposites until they reach critical fluency. After that point, I try to start working more on expanding their vocabulary by working on synonyms.
