Often within corporate culture, the bottom line takes precedence over
the public interest. Many of the world’s problems—whether they be environmental
degradation, disparities of wealth or social injustice—are in a large measure the
result of corporate irresponsibility. At AIM Language Learning, we want to be
part of the solution, not part of the problem. We believe that individuals, governments,
NGOs and corporations must work together for the common good to help transform this planet
into one that is safer, healthier, greener and more just. It is up to each one of
us to minimize our negative impacts and maximize our positive impacts on the world
around us.
Here are some of the things we are doing
at AIM Language Learning to
make
a difference:
- Using recycled paper (with high
postconsumer content) in all our printing
(program materials and promotional
material) and in our office
- Giving 3% of our pre-tax profits to the
Stephen Lewis Foundation, which helps
those orphaned by the ravages of AIDS
in Africa
- Paying for carbon offsets, so that all our
workshop presenters’ travel, as well as
the office use and commuting of AIM
employees, is carbon-neutral. As technology
improves, we will
be offering virtual
workshops, which will further
cut our greenhouse-gas emissions*
|
- Basing our operations in a small community,
which reduces travel time to
the office or
between contractors to a
maximum of 5 km, thus
reducing greenhouse-gas
emissions
- Supporting the local community by
providing jobs that are well-paid and
often non-commuting
- Actively building a community of educators
through our web forum, encouraging
conversations about good
second language
instruction across
continents and oceans
|
Plans for the future include partnering with
educational NGOs in developing parts of the
world to supply language-learning materials at no cost. We
believe that being fluent in a second language gives marginalized peoples a much
better chance to succeed.
We would love to hear from you! What do
you think AIM Language Learning can do to
become a better corporate citizen?
* Not all carbon offsets are equal. Ones
supporting renewable energy are the best.
